Before Matter, smart home devices from different brands didn’t work together. Each device needed its own app and hub, making your smart home setup complex and frustrating.
Matter was introduced as a "universal lanquage" for all your smart home devices, regardless of their brand. It aims to enhance interoperability and compatibility between different manufacturers and ecosystems, while always ensuring local control as an option. Matter supports multiple communication protocols, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Thread, and Ethernet.
Before Matter
With Matter
Control your devices effortlessly through popular platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, and Samsung SmartThings.
Matter's Multi-Admin feature empowers you to connect a single Matter device to multiple smart home platforms simultaneously.
Matter devices remain operational offline for reliable control, communicating locally via Wi-Fi/Thread to avoid cloud security risks. With end-to-end encryption and strict access controls, they deliver enhanced privacy protection and superior security.
Matter simplifies setup with universal QR code pairing—no app downloads or manual Wi-Fi entry. One-time configuration syncs across all platforms, while smart networking auto-optimizes connections. Go from unboxing to control in under 30 seconds!
To utilize the Matter standard in your smart home, you should know a few key components.
The router provides internet connectivity, while the Deco offers both network connectivity and Matter control capabilities.
The Matter Controller, commonly referred to as a Hub, serves as the essential core of smart home ecosystems. As the central control nexus, it enables remote control functionality that would otherwise be impossible.
To manage Matter devices through your preferred app, ensure the app and your Matter controller are from the same brand.
For Matter-certified Thread devices, a Thread-capable border router is required to enable cross-protocol connectivity—allowing control via Wi-Fi devices (e.g., smartphones) over Thread networks.
For non-Matter-certified devices (e.g., Zigbee/Z-Wave/IR equipment), a bridge is required to integrate them into the Matter ecosystem, enabling seamless interoperability with native Matter devices.

Matter devices must connect to a compatible hub. As a powerful Matter controller, the Tapo H500 not only integrates your Tapo devices into the Matter ecosystem but also seamlessly connects and manages Matter-enabled devices from other brands via the Tapo app. Break down brand barriers and achieve true interoperability for your smart home!
Employing Deco as your IoT network's controller simplifies setup, negating the need for additional network gear or dedicated controllers. With the Deco app, you can effortlessly manage your Matter products to enjoy a seamless user experience.
TP-Link's robust ecosystem seamlessly integrates Deco mesh Wi-Fi with Tapo and Kasa smart home devices. Deco provides strong, reliable Wi-Fi coverage, while Tapo and Kasa offer a wide range of devices controllable through a single app. This unified system simplifies your smart home setup and delivers a seamless user experience.

The Matter working group, led by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), boasts over 300 members, including industry giants like Amazon, Apple, Google, Samsung, and TP-Link. A complete list of members can be found on the official CSA website.
Matter development varies by platform, as features depend on device firmware and ecosystem compatibility. For example, Matter 1.3 supports energy monitoring, but Apple Home doesn’t, so TP-Link’s Matter-enabled devices won’t display this feature there.
Matter has no official definition of hub, and different companies define hub differently. Matter controller can be built into other devices (such as Apple TV, Alexa Echo, Google Nets Hub, TP-Link Deco, and so on) or even be a smartphone App (such as the LG ThinQ App).
Matter Hub—also called Matter Controller, is required for a Matter-enabled device to be set up with the corresponding smart home App. Matter Hub can be built into other devices (such as Apple TV, Alexa Echo 3rd Gen, Google Nets Hub, and so on) or even be a smartphone App (such as the LG ThinQ App). All new Matter-compatible products’ packaging or device body will bear the new Matter "mark" – three arc-tipped arrows pointing inward – and a brand logo, just the word "matter" in a sans serif font. To find out if your existing smart home device is Matter compatible, you can search the CSA Certified Product Search web page. First, scroll down to "Program Type" and check the "Matter" box. You can then search by keyword or filter results by device type or company.
No, Matter is designed to work alongside existing platforms. You can still use your preferred smart home apps.
Matter simplifies the onboarding process for new devices. By utilizing numeric and QR codes, along with Bluetooth Low Energy technology, Matter allows for a seamless and often single-step integration of devices into your network and chosen smart home platforms.
