What should I do if I cannot control my Tapo or Kasa smart devices using the Tapo app?

The following situations are meant to assist in troubleshooting device control concerns using your Tapo or Kasa Smart devices in the Tapo App.  This FAQ assumes you have already configured the devices and they show as configured devices in the app.

Case 1: Unable to control the smart device in the local network.

Step 1 Check the LED status on the smart device as per its User Guide. If the LED status shows the smart device is not configured successfully, reset the device, and reconfigure it.

Step 2 Ensure the router is working properly. You can test by connecting a phone or computer to the network and testing web access.

Step 3 Make sure there are no mac filtering, blacklist and firewall rules on the router blocking access. If there are, disable the rules and then reboot the smart device and test access.

Step 4 Check the signal strength and move the smart device closer to the router if possible.  If the smart device cannot be moved, you may need a signal enhancer like a range extender.

Step 5 Contact TP-Link support for further assistance.

Case 2. Unable to control the smart device remotely.

Step 1 Ensure you can control the smart device in the local network. If you are unable to control the smart device in the local network, please refer to Case 1 to troubleshoot.

Step 2 Upgrade your smart device’s firmware to the latest one.

How to update the firmware of the Tapo & Kasa devices on the Tapo App?

Step 3 Try to change the DNS server on your home router.

Step 4 Disable firewall settings if there is one on your home router, then reboot the router.

Step 5 Contact TP-Link support for further assistance.
