What Is Super VDSL?

Super VDSL (also called: 35b Supervectoring, Vplus, or VDSL Annex Q) is the latest standard in DSL technology developed by Alcatel-Lucent and standardized in 2015, gaining a significant increase in transmission data rates over the existing VDSL2 standard. Super VDSL is an optimized solution to medium-length loop broadband services for operators and end users to get the highest possible speeds cost-effectively.

Achieves 3.5× Faster Speeds

Super VDSL benefits from increasing the frequency spectrum from 17 MHz to 35 MHz compared with the previous generation of VDSL, achieving an ultra-fast downstream data rate up to 350 Mbps, which is 3.5× faster than the VDSL2 profile 17a standard.
Super VDSL is also fully compatible with VDSL2, ADSL2+, ADSL2, and ADSL. It uses the same discrete multi-tone (DMT) and 4K tone space as existing VDSL2 Vectoring to guarantee backwards compatibility, creating a smooth transition to Super VDSL.

① Download Time demonstrates how long it would take for an individual 800 MB MP4 file to download. These times assume a line operates at the speeds shown at all times. In real-life, speeds often vary throughout the day, especially in cases where a broadband line is shared between multiple different devices.

② In the standard of VDSL’s 35b profile, there’s also a trick that can be done to increase download bandwidth. The standard 35b is U/D 100M/300M, but some ISPs will turn the DSL line to U/D 60M/350M to give users higher download bandwidths.

Balances Throughput
and Distance

Compared with existing VDSL2 17a, Super VDSL offers higher throughput on loops shorter than 700 meters—up to 3× faster. On longer loops, Super VDSL falls back to VDSL 2 17a performance. As for G.Fast deployment, the latest DSL protocol standard which provides high speeds on very short loops, Super VDSL offers higher throughput on medium distance loops and longer reach. It also delivers higher density and lower network costs than G.Fast.Overall, Super VDSL provides the best balance between transmission reach and network throughput.
