Tapo/Kasa Devices Appear Offline After Changing or Resetting the Router
Introduction
After changing your Internet Service Provider (ISP), replacing your router, or resetting the router Wi-Fi settings, Tapo or Kasa smart devices may appear offline in the app. This typically occurs because the devices are still attempting to connect to the previous Wi‑Fi network. This article explains how to restore the network connection and bring your devices back online.
Troubleshooting
Currently, Tapo/Kasa app does not support switching Wi‑Fi networks directly. However, you can reconnect your devices to internet using one of the methods below:
Method 1: Use the Same Wi‑Fi Settings
Configure the new router with the same wireless settings as the previous one, including:
- Wi‑Fi network name (SSID)
- Encryption type
- Wi‑Fi password
Once the settings match, the device should automatically reconnect to the new router.
Method 2: Reset and Reconfigure the Device
If using the same wireless settings is not possible, reset the device and set it up again with the new Wi‑Fi network.
- Reset the device: Visit the Download Center to find the Quick Installation Guide (QIG) or User Guide (UG) for your device, and follow the reset instructions provided.
