Matter Setup Guides for Alexa, Google and Apple

This article will show you how to set up your matter-certified product in Alexa, Google, and Apple ecosystems via Matter. For Matter setup troubleshooting and other issues, please refer to FAQ General Questions about Matter.

Note: The Matter setup code can only be used to add the device to the first ecosystem. For the second commissioning, you will need to open the app of the first ecosystem to generate a new setup code.

Add to Alexa via Matter

Before You Start

Since Alexa's setup is temporarily limited, make sure Alexa is the first matter ecosystem when adding your matter-certified devices to Alexa. If you are unsure, please factory reset your device before setup.

1. Check compatibility (Click here for more information)

  • Alexa app version: 2.2.491118.0 or later
  • Matter-supported Echo devices:

Note: Please update the software of your Echo devices to a compatible version, such as v8289070468.

2. How to set up your matter device

a. Restore your device to factory default settings.

Note: Please refer to the manual of your product for detailed instructions. Take Tapo P125M as an example. You can press and hold the Power button for 10s to factory default your device.

b. Launch the Alexa app and go to the Devices page.

c. Tap + and then tap Add Device to add a new device.

d. Choose Other, tap Matter, and then tap Next on the following pages.

e. Tap Yes on the confirming page.

f. Tap Scan QR Code and scan the QR code on your device.

Alternatively, you can tap Try Numeric Code Instead? to enter the numeric setup code that comes along with your device.

g. Wait for your device to set up, then choose the Wi-Fi you want your device to connect to and enter the corresponding Wi-Fi password.

h. Tap Done. Now you can find your device on the Device list and use your voice to control your device, such as “Alexa, turn on my smart plug” and “Alexa, turn off my smart plug”.

Notes:

  • The pairing mode of your Matter-certified device will automatically turn off in 15 minutes. You can turn the pairing mode back on by restarting your device, such as unplugging your plug.
  • Alexa will create the name according to the device type. Take Tapo P125M for an example. The first Tapo P125M paired with Alexa will be automatically named “First Plug”.

3. How to integrate your device into another ecosystem

As the setup code can only be used to add the device to the first ecosystem, for the second commissioning, you need to open the app of the first ecosystem to generate a new setup code.

Take integrating your device into the Google ecosystem as an example:

a. Launch your Alexa and go to the device Settings page.

b. Tap Other Assistants and Apps and then tap Add Another to create an 11-digit setup code.

c. Copy the setup code.

d. Launch the Google Home app and follow the setup instruction to enter the setup code and follow the app instructions to complete the setup. Now you can turn on/off your smart device from both Alexa and Google.

Add to Google via Matter

Note: Please update the software/firmware of your controller devices to a compatible version, such as v1.56.324896 for Google Nest Hub (2nd gen).

2. How to set up your matter device

a. Restore your device to factory default settings.

Note: Please refer to the manual of your product for detailed instructions. Take Tapo P125M as an example. You can press and hold the Power button for 10s to factory reset your device.

b. Launch your Google Home App. Tap +, choose Set up device and tap New Device to add a new device.

c. Choose Matter and tap Next.

d. Tap Yes on the confirming page.

e. Scan the setup QR code on your device.

If your device comes without a QR code but a numeric code, you can tap Set up without QR code and enter the numeric code.

f. Tap Done when the device is connected.

g. Choose a location for your device and give it a name. Then you can find your device on the Device list and turn on/off your device on the Google Home app or with Google assistants.

Note: The pairing mode of your Matter-certified device will automatically turn off in 15 minutes. You can turn the pairing mode back on by restarting your device, such as unplugging your plug.

3. How to integrate your device into another ecosystem

As the setup code can only be used to add the device to the first ecosystem, for the second commissioning, you need to go to the app of the first ecosystem to generate a new setup code.

Take integrating your device into the Apple ecosystem as an example:

a. Launch your Google Home app and go to the device settings page.

b. Tap Linked Matter apps & services and then tap Link apps & services.

c. Create a new paring code:

  • Use Pairing Code:

(1) Choose Using pairing code.

(2) Copy the pairing code.

(3) Launch the Home app and follow the setup instruction to enter the pairing code.

Note: The pairing code will expire in 3 minutes.

  • Use QR Code:

(1) Choose Share with QR code.

(2) Open the Apple Home app on another mobile device and scan this QR code.

Notes:

  • Make sure that the pairing page of Google Home remains open when you scan the sharing QR code.
  • The sharing QR code will expire in 3 minutes.

d. Follow the setup instructions to complete the setup. Now you can turn on/off your device from both Apple and Google.

Add to Apple via Matter

1. Check compatibility (Click here for more information)

  • iOS system: Version 16.2 or later.
  • Matter-supported Controller: Home Pod, Home Pod mini, or Apple TV.

Note: Please update your iOS devices to iOS 16.2 or a later version.

2. How to set up your matter device

a. Restore your device to factory default settings.

Note: Please refer to the manual of your product for detailed instructions. Take Tapo P125M as an example. You can press and hold the Power button for 10s to factory default your device.

b. Launch your Home App. Tap + and then tap Add or Scan Accessory to add a new device.

c. Scan the setup QR code on your device.

d. Choose a location for your device and give it a name.

e.Choose how your device will appear. Now you can check your device on the Device list and turn on/off your device on the Home app.

Note: The pairing mode of your Matter-certified device will automatically turn off in 15 minutes. You can turn the pairing mode back on by restarting your device, such as unplugging your plug.

3. How to integrate your device into another ecosystem

As the setup code can only be used to add the device to the first ecosystem, you need to go to the app of the first ecosystem to generate a new setup code for the second commissioning.

Take integrating your device into the Google ecosystem as an example:

a. Launch your Home app and go to the Device Settings page.

b.Tap Turn On Pairing Mode and then Copy Code.

c. Launch the Google Home app and follow the setup instructions to enter the setup code and complete the setup. Now you can turn on/off your device from both Apple and Google.

Note: You will need to wait for 5 minutes to create a new code. Please copy the code or take a screenshot to keep the code. Alternatively, you can restart your device to generate a new code immediately.

Add Your Paired Matter Device to the Tapo App

Before You Start

Please update your Tapo app to a compatible version.

iOS: 2.14.110 or later,

Android: 2.12.705 or later

After setting up your device via Matter on third-party platforms, you can follow the process below to add your device to the Tapo app.

a. Connect your mobile phone to the same Wi-Fi network as your device.

b. Open the Tapo app and the device will be automatically found.

c. Tap ADD DEVICE to add your device.

d. Follow the app to complete your setup process.

If no window pops up on your Tapo app or you accidentally choose Not Now on the above pop-up window, you can manually add your device to Tapo.

a. Connect your mobile phone to the same Wi-Fi network as your device.

b. Launch the Tapo app and tap + on the home page

c. Choose the device you want to add from Discovered Devices.

d. Follow the app to complete your setup process.
