How to Update the Time Zone After Canada's 2026 Clock Change

Configuration Guide
Last updated: October 26, 2026

On November 1, 2026, British Columbia, Alberta, and other Canadian regions stop changing clocks permanently. If your TP-Link, Tapo, or Kasa clock follows daylight saving time, it will be an hour off. This guide shows how to update the time zone in the apps and on the web page.

Key Takeaways

  • The device clock will be one hour off after November 1, 2026 if the selected time zone still observes daylight saving time.
  • On Deco and routers, choose the fixed-offset time zone for your region and turn off Daylight Saving Time.
  • On Tapo and Kasa devices, select the correct time zone only. There is no separate Daylight Saving Time switch to change.
  • The Tapo and Kasa apps may prompt you when they detect that the device time zone does not match your location.
  • Tapo cameras and doorbells each keep their own time zone, while Tapo plugs, bulbs, and switches must be reset to change it.

Why the Device Clock May Be One Hour Off

Starting November 1, 2026, several regions in Canada will no longer switch between standard time and daylight saving time. These regions adopt a fixed, year-round time offset and will not change their clocks again. This affects users in:

  • British Columbia (most of the province)
  • British Columbia — Dawson Creek, Fort Nelson (Peace River)
  • British Columbia — East Kootenay (Cranbrook, Invermere, Fernie, etc.)
  • Alberta
  • Northwest Territories
  • Saskatchewan
  • Yukon

If your device is set to a time zone that still observes daylight saving time, the clock will be off by one hour after November 1, 2026, so every time-based feature on the device runs one hour off as well. Deco and other routers keep time by the time zone you select on the device, while Tapo and Kasa devices take the time zone from the app or from the phone used during setup, so both need the correct setting.

Steps to Update the Time Zone on Deco and Routers

Step 1: Open the Time Settings Page

The menu path differs by product type. Open the time settings page using the guide for your product:

Step 2: Select the Time Zone and Turn Off Daylight Saving Time

1. Find the time zone option on the time settings page.

2. Select the time zone that matches your location in the table below.

3. Make sure Daylight Saving Time is disabled.

Your location Select this time zone Daylight Saving Time
British Columbia (Vancouver, Victoria, and most of the province) (UTC-07:00) Coordinated Universal Time-07 Off
British Columbia — Dawson Creek, Fort Nelson (Peace River) (UTC-07:00) Coordinated Universal Time-07 Off
British Columbia — East Kootenay (Cranbrook, Invermere, Fernie, etc.) (UTC-06:00) Saskatchewan Off
Alberta (UTC-06:00) Saskatchewan Off
Northwest Territories (UTC-06:00) Saskatchewan Off
Saskatchewan (UTC-06:00) Saskatchewan Off
Yukon (UTC-07:00) Coordinated Universal Time-07 Off

Notes:

1) Options in the time zone list are labeled by UTC offset, not by region. (UTC-06:00) Saskatchewan means a fixed offset of UTC-6 with no seasonal change, which is what Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and the East Kootenay region now use. You do not need to live in Saskatchewan to select it.

2) On some firmware versions of Deco and Mobile Wi-Fi routers, the Daylight Saving Time option is not available. If you cannot find it, skip this step and continue with the configuration.

Step 3: Save and Verify the Time

1. Click Save to apply the settings.

2. Check that the device displays the correct local time.

Change the Time Zone on Tapo and Kasa Devices

When you open the Tapo or Kasa app, it may detect that the device time zone does not match your location and prompt you to change it. Tapo and Kasa devices have no separate Daylight Saving Time switch, so selecting the correct time zone is all that is required.

Kasa Devices

In the Kasa app: Change the time zone as described in Kasa Time Not Sync? How to Fix Kasa Device Time.

For Kasa devices managed in the Tapo app:

  1. Open the Tapo app.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top-left corner, or tap Me at the far right of the bottom navigation bar.
  3. Tap View Account, then select Location and Time.
  4. Select the time zone that matches your location.

The new time zone applies to Kasa devices only.

Tapo Cameras and Doorbells

Each camera stores its own time zone. Open the camera in the Tapo app, go to Device Settings > Device Info, and select the time zone.

Tapo Plugs, Bulbs, and Switches

These devices do not support individual time zone settings. Their time zone is set during initial configuration, typically matching the time zone of the phone used for setup, and it does not change automatically when you change your phone's time zone or the Tapo app account time zone. To change the time zone of these devices, reset the device and set it up again.

Q&A

Q1: Do I Need to Change the Setting Before November 1?

You can make the change at any time. Before November 1, the clock shows the correct time either way, because the current offsets happen to match. From November 1 onward, the settings above keep the time correct.

Q2: Do I Need to Repeat This Every Year?

No. This is a one-time setting. It is kept across firmware updates, and no seasonal adjustment is needed.

Q3: What Happens If I Do Not Change It?

After November 1, 2026, the device clock will be one hour off. This can affect any time-based feature, including scheduled reboots, Parental Controls time limits, guest network time limits, QoS schedules, and schedules or automations in the Tapo and Kasa apps.

Yes. TP-Link is updating the time zone options to reflect these changes. The steps above work on your current firmware, with no update required.
