What is GPON?

PON (Passive Optical Network) is a point-to-multipoint (P2MP) passive optical network. GPON is the mainstream gigabit version with the widest application range.

GPON is the latest generation of broadband passive optical integrated access standards based on the ITU-TG.984.x standard. GPON has higher bandwidth, faster data transmission rates, longer transmission distance and various interface types. Most ISPs regard it as the ideal technology for a comprehensive transformation of network services.

GPON uses the same network topology as APON and EPON, and consists of three major components: the ONU, ODN, and OLT. The GPON network structure is as follows.

OLT (Optical Line Terminal) is an aggregation device that terminates the PON protocol at the central office.

ONU (Optical Network Unit) is a user-side unit or terminal that provides various interfaces to users at the client level. The OLT and the ONU are connected to communicate with each other through an intermediate passive optical network, the ODN.

ODN (Optical Distribution Network) is composed of passive optical devices such as optical fiber and one or more passive optical splitters. The ODN also provides an optical channel between the OLT and the ONU.
