How to Set Up Hotspot Backup on your TP-Link Deco
Hotspot Backup allows you to configure a nearby mobile hotspot or Wi-Fi network as a backup internet source. If your primary wired connection fails, the Deco system automatically detects and connects to your pre-configured backup source to maintain your internet access. Once the primary connection is restored, the system switches back seamlessly.
Key Takeaways
- Hotspot Backup uses a mobile hotspot or another Wi-Fi network when the primary wired internet connection is unavailable.
- The hotspot must be powered on, within range, and able to access the internet before Deco can use it.
- You can save multiple hotspots, and Deco automatically selects the best available configured hotspot.
- Setting a fixed WAN port is recommended when wired clients need internet access during backup operation.
- Speed Limit and Access Permission help control bandwidth, mobile data use, and which devices can go online through the hotspot.
Requirements
- Update the Deco app and your Deco units to the latest available firmware.
- Prepare a mobile hotspot or Wi-Fi network with internet access.
- Place the hotspot within a stable Wi-Fi range of the main Deco.
Set Up Hotspot Backup
Step 1: Locate and Enable Hotspot Backup Feature
Open the Deco app, go to More > Advanced > Internet Backup.

Enable Internet Backup. If multiple backup modes are available, select Hotspot Backup.

Step 2: Connect to Your Hotspot Wi-Fi
The app will automatically search for nearby hotspots. If your hotspot’s Wi-Fi is hidden, simply click Add Hotspot and manually enter its Wi-Fi name and password.
Otherwise, wait for the scan to complete, then select a nearby hotspot from the list and enter its Wi-Fi password.
Note: When there are multiple hotspots added, Deco will automatically connect to the best one.

After adding a hotspot, you can test its network connection.
Note: The test may take some time. Make sure the hotspot is turned on and has internet access. The Deco network may be temporarily unstable during the test.

To add multiple hotspots, go to More > Advanced > Internet Backup and click the Add button next to Hotspot List.

Step 3: Set a Fixed WAN Port (Optional)
Set a fixed WAN port to ensure wired clients can connect to the internet when using the backup network.
Note: Tap set a fixed WAN port or go to More > Advanced > WAN Port. Then disable Auto WAN Port and set a fixed WAN port for your Deco.

Step 4: Set Speed Limit and Access Permission (Optional)
You can configure the following settings as needed.
- Speed Limit: Limit the download speed and upload speed for your Deco network to prevent traffic overflow.

- Access Permission: Allow specific clients to access the internet by hotspot. Other clients will be disconnected when your Deco is using hotspot Wi-Fi.
Note: You can add clients currently connected to the Deco network to the Client List or delete clients from the list.

Setup complete!
When the primary internet connection fails, turn on the configured hotspot. Deco will automatically switch to the hotspot to keep the network online.
Note: While Hotspot Backup is active, tap Switch Hotspot to select another configured hotspot.
