This guide makes setup simple for everyone, covering helpful accessibility resources, what’s in the box, how it looks, and where to begin.

Our Tether app also offers accessibility features, such as increasing page contrast, switching to landscape mode and increasing font size. You can enable them during setup to make it much easier to set up your device and adjust settings! For more accessibility guidance, refer to Accessibility Support.

Step 1. Learn About Your Range Extender

This section introduces the range extender's package contents and appearance, including its ports, buttons, LEDs and product label.

1. Unpack Your Range Extender

Your package includes: a range extender, a power adapter, an Ethernet cable, and installation guides.

  • Power Adapter: A block-shaped charger with a cord. Plug it into the range extender’s power port to turn it on.
  • Ethernet Cable: A thick cable with plastic connectors at both ends. Each connector has a small clip to hold it in place.  To use the cable, insert one end to the LAN port on your range extender until you hear or feel a click and the other end to your client devices. To unplug it, you can press the click and pull it out.

2. Appearance

The Range Extender has a rectangular shape and is designed to sit flat on a surface, such as a table or shelf.

First, locate the small rubber footpads on the bottom of the extender. With the footpads facing down, place the extender on a flat surface.

The LED display is located on the front panel:

  • LED display: On the front panel of the extender, there is a display composed of multiple LEDs that show various patterns, indicating different operational states.

The 3 rectangular small buttons are positioned below the LED display, close to the bottom edge. Facing the front panel, they are arranged from left to right as follow:

  • WPS Button: The first protruding button. Press the button on your main router, and immediately press this button on the extender for 1 second. Then wait for about 2 minutes to set up the connection.
  • Wi-Fi Button: The second protruding button. Press and hold this button for about 1 second to turn on or off the wireless function of your extender.
  • LED Button: The third protruding button. Press for 1 second to turn the extender ‘s LED on or off.

Next, face directly the side that has three recessed rectangular openings aligned in a row. This side is the back panel. These ports are arranged from top to bottom as follow:

  • Two 1 Gbps LAN Ports: The first and second square ports. In Range Extender Mode, connect your device to the port for a wired connection. In Access Point Mode, link the extender to your router to convert a wired connection into a wireless signal.
  • 2.5Gbps LAN Port: The third square port. In Range Extender Mode, connect your device to the port for a wired connection. In Access Point Mode, link the extender to your router to convert a wired connection into a wireless signal.

Below the three ports, there are two buttons and a round power port. From bottom to top, they are arranged as follow:

  • Power Port: A round port. Plug in the power adapter to supply power.
  • Power On/Off Button: A round protruding button. Press to turn the extender on or off. It is pressed down when the extender is powered on and pops up when powered off.
  • Reset Button: A tiny recessed hole (needs a pin to press). Hold for over 10 seconds to reset the extender to its factory settings.

On the bottom of the router, there is a recessed label. This label includes: the extender’s default access address, default network name (SSID), and MAC address. For your extender, the default SSID is "TP-Link_Extender" and no password.

Step 2. Set Up Your Range Extender

1. Position your extender next to your Wi-Fi router. With its bottom facing down, plug the extender into a nearby electrical outlet.

2. Scan the QR code below to download the Tether app for iOS or Android, or scan the QR code on the Quick Setup Guide for the Tether app. The app will walk you through setup.

Note: Please remain online (Wi-Fi or mobile data) throughout the app download and login steps.
