Introduction

Tapo cameras are equipped with advanced noise-reduction algorithms that suppress ambient noise and deliver clear audio capture. In most environments, this ensures a reliable sound monitoring experience.

However, in certain situations or challenging environments, some background noise may still be present. This article provides practical tips to help you further minimize noise and optimize audio performance based on your specific setup.

Troubleshooting

Step 1. Update software and firmware.

  • Ensure the Tapo app on your phone is updated to the latest version.
  • Check for and install any available firmware updates for your camera within the Tapo app (Me > Firmware Update).

Step 2. Adjust the camera’s placement and environment.

  • Avoid Enclosed Spaces: For Indoor Cameras, do not place the camera in overly enclosed areas or near sound-reflective surfaces like walls and corners, as this can cause echo and reverberation.
  • Keep Away from EMI Sources: Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a common cause of audio noise. Keep the camera away from potential EMI sources such as microwave ovens, refrigerators, and power transformers.
  • Prevent Audio Feedback: When using the Voice Call function, ensure your phone is not too close to the camera, ideally in a different room, to prevent feedback loops (squealing or echoing).

Step 3. Optimize hardware and connections.

  • Use the Original Power Adapter: Always use the official power adapter provided with the camera. Low-quality or incompatible adapters can introduce electrical interference, causing buzzing or static sounds.
  • Ensure a Stable Network Connection: A weak or unstable Wi-Fi signal can cause audio to stutter or desynchronize. Move the camera closer to your router, or use an Ethernet cable for a more stable connection if the camera supports it.
  • Check for Physical Obstructions: Gently clean the microphone and speaker openings on the camera using a dry, soft cloth and small tweezers to ensure they are not blocked by dust or debris.

Step 4. Lower the camera’s microphone volume in the Tapo app > camera Live View > Talk page to reduce background noise, as excessively high microphone volume settings may amplify ambient sound.

Step 5. Perform basic device resets.

  • Restart the Camera: Unplug the camera from power, wait for about one minute, and then plug it back in. This can resolve many temporary software glitches.
  • Restart the Tapo app: Fully close the Tapo app on your phone and reopen it.

Contact TP-Link technical support with the following information if you still encounter issues after trying the above suggestions.

  • Model number and OS version of your mobile device
  • Tapo app version
  • MAC address of your camera
  • Videos and the frequency of the issue
