Introduction

VIGI Cloud VMS supports multiple user roles to help organizations manage access permissions across different sites, devices, and administrative functions. This article explains the permissions available for each role and provides guidance on selecting the appropriate role for different users.

User roles explained

VIGI Cloud VMS currently supports six user roles:

Owner

Super Admin

Admin

Operator

Viewer

Live Only

Each role provides a different level of access to devices, site settings, user management, and video operations.

Owner

Owner is the highest-privilege account in an organization.

In addition to having full access to organization resources, the Owner account is also the TP-Link ID to which devices in the organization are bound.

Users with this role can:

  • Manage all sites, devices, users, and organization settings
  • Transfer organization ownership to another user
  • Manage device ownership associated with the organization

Note: Devices added to an organization are bound to the Owner account. When organization ownership is transferred, the device binding relationship is also transferred to the new Owner.

Super Admin

Super Admin has full access to all resources within the organization, including sites, devices, users, and organization settings.

Unlike the Owner account, a Super Admin cannot transfer organization ownership or manage device ownership associated with the organization.

Admin

Admin users can:

  • Add, manage, and control devices
  • Preview live video
  • Play back recordings
  • View and edit site settings
  • Invite and manage users according to their assigned permissions

This role is typically used for site administrators.

Operator

Operator users can perform device-related operations but cannot manage users or modify system settings.

This role is suitable for maintenance personnel and device operators.

Viewer

Viewer users can preview live video and play back recordings but cannot modify devices, users, or site settings.

Live Only

Live Only users can preview live video only and do not have access to playback or management functions.

Selection guidance

The following recommendations can help determine the appropriate role:

Site Role

Permission

Owner

Has full access to all resources. Owns the organization and the device binding relationships. Can transfer organization ownership and device ownership to another user.

Super Admin

Has full access to all resources. Cannot transfer organization ownership or device ownership.

Admin

Add, manage, and control the devices

Preview and play back the videos of a site

View and edit site settings

Operator

Can perform device operations but lacks user and system management permissions.

Viewer

Preview and play back the videos of a site

Live Only

Preview the videos of a site

Selecting the appropriate role helps improve security and prevents unnecessary access to management functions.

Conclusion

VIGI Cloud VMS provides six user roles to support different management and monitoring requirements. By understanding the permissions available to Super Admin, Admin, Operator, Viewer, and Live Only accounts, administrators can assign appropriate access levels and improve both security and operational efficiency.
