A static route is a pre-determined path that network information must travel to reach a specific host or network. Data from one point to another will always follow the same path regardless of other considerations. Normal Internet usage does not require this setting to be configured.
Step 1
Open the web browser and type the IP address of the device in the address bar (default is 192.168.1.1). Press Enter.
Step 2
Type the username and password in the login page, the default username and password both are admin and thenclick OK to login the web page.
Step 3
Click on Advanced Setup->Routing, and you will see the routing information in the next screen.
Step 4
Click ADD ROUTE button to add a new route and then Save.
Destination IP Address: This parameter specifies the IP network address of the final destination.
IP Subnet Mask: Enter the subnet mask for this destination.
Gateway IP Address: Enter the IP address of the gateway. The gateway is an immediate neighbor of your ADSL Router that will forward the packets to the destination. On the LAN, the gateway must be a router on the same segment as your Router; over Internet (WAN), the gateway must be the IP address of one of the remote nodes.
Metric: Metric represents the "cost" of transmission for routing purposes. Enter a number that approximates the cost for this link. The number need not to be precise, but it must between 1 and 15. In practice, 2 or 3 is usually a good number.
Announced in RIP: If set to Yes, the route to this remote node will be propagated to other hosts through RIP broadcasts. If No, this route is kept private and is not included in RIP broadcasts.
Here we take the following application for an example.
TD-W8951ND is connected to Internet by PPPoE connection and it is also connected to the LAN port of Router2 by an Ethernet cable. Computers connected to TD-W8951ND will go online automatically by PPPoE connection and cannot access Local Network via Router 2.
How can the computers connected to TD-W8951ND access Local Network?
In order to make computers access the Local Network, we need to set a static routing on the TD-W8951ND and the packets requiring for Local Network access will be forwarded to Router 2. The settings on TD-W8951ND are as the following screen:
