Step 1. Learn About Your Range Extender
This section introduces the range extender's package contents and appearance, including its ports, buttons, LEDs and product label.
1. Unpack Your Range Extender
Your package includes a range extender and installation guides.
2. Appearance
The range extender has a rectangular shape. It has a pronged plug that easily fits into standard electrical outlets on its back, and on the opposite side, features LED indicators that show the status of power, signal strength, and connection. It has no external antenna.
On the front panel of the extender, there are 5 LEDs in a ring. The left half of the LED ring consists the following from top to bottom: RE LED, wireless LED, Power LED, and Ethernet LED. The right half contains five LEDs indicating signal strength:
RE LED:
- On/Off: The extender is connected or not connected to your router’s wireless network.
- Blinking: WPS connection is in progress.
Wireless LED
- On/Off: The extender’s wireless function is enabled or disabled.
Power LED
- On/Off: The extender is on or off.
- Blinking: The system is starting up or firmware upgrade is in progress.
Ethernet LED
- On/Off: The Ethernet port is connected or not connected to a powered-on device.
Signal Strength (5 LEDs)
- Indicates the Wi-Fi connection between the extender and the router. More lit LEDs indicates a better signal strength. With 3 or more LEDs lit up indicating a good signal.
In the center of the LED ring is the WPS button: Press the WPS button on your main router, and immediately press this button on the extender for 1 second. Then wait for about 2 minutes to set up the connection.
Facing the front of the extender, at the bottom side of the extender, there are a Reset button in the middle and an Ethernet port on its right:
Reset Button: A tiny recessed hole (needs a pin to press). Press and hold for 1 second to reset the extender.
Ethernet Port: A rectangular opening, larger than a standard phone jack. In Range Extender Mode, connect your device to the port for a wired connection. In Access Point Mode, link the extender to your router to convert a wired connection into a wireless signal.
On the back of the extender, there is a smooth label. This label includes: the extender’s default access address, default network name (SSID), and MAC address. For your extender, the default SSID is "TP-Link_Extender" and no password.
Step 2. Get Started
1. Position your extender next to your Wi-Fi router. Keep the device in the orientation previously described, then plug it into a nearby electrical outlet. Wait for about 1-2 minutes for the extender to get ready for setup.
