[FAQ ID: 491]Why do I failed to upgrade the firmware of the TP-LINK ADSL2+ modem router

Suitable for: TD-8816, TD-8817, TD-8840T, TD-W8151N, TD-W8901G, TD-W8950ND, TD-W8951ND, TD-W8960N, TD-W8961ND

The firmware upgrading fails, it may be caused by the following issue:
 
1.   The format of the firmware is incorrect.
 As for Trendchip solution, you will come across the error massage “You put a  wrong file”.
 
As for Broadcom solution, you will see “Image Uploading failed. The selected file contains an illegal image.
 
Please check the file you use to update the modem, if it ends with *.zip, please try to extract the zip file by the following steps.
Step 1
Please right click on the zip file and go to Extract to
 
Step 2
then the rar software will ask you to choose the destination folder  to  save the firmware file. And we choose Desktop--->click

As for Trendchip solution,  the correct-format of firmware is ras, like the following picture:

As for Broadcom solution, the correct-format firmware ends with *.up, like the following picture:
 
 
2.   Wrong hardware issue.
As for Broadcom solution, you will come across the following error massage “Image Uploading failed. The selected file contains an illegal image.
 
As for Trendchip solution, you will come across the following erros massage:Error:FAIL TO UPDATE DUE TO…The upload file was not accepted by the router.”
